Russia accuses the American military of recruiting jihadist fighters associated with ISIS to carry out terrorist attacks on the territory of Russia and the former Soviet states that are part of the Commonwealth of Independent States, TASS reports.
“According to reliable data received by the Foreign Intelligence Service of the Russian Federation (SVR), the American military is actively recruiting fighters from jihadist groups affiliated with the Islamic State and Al-Qaeda to carry out terrorist attacks on the territory of Russia and Russia. CIS countries,” said the statement of the service, headed by the head of Russian intelligence, Sergei Naryshkin, released to the press on Monday.
The SVR claims that 60 such terrorists “who have combat experience in the Middle East” have been selected and are undergoing an “accelerated training course” at the US base in Al-Tanf in Syria, where they will be taught the skills of making and using improvised explosive devices, “ as well as ways of conducting subversive activities.”
“Particular attention is paid to planning attacks on well-guarded facilities, including foreign diplomatic missions,” the SVR claims, adding that the US plans to transfer militants to the territory of Russia and neighboring states in small groups.
Russian espionage claims that the US is preparing terrorist attacks against its neighbors
The Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), a regional organization created after the collapse of the USSR, includes 9 of the 15 former Soviet federative republics: Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, the Republic of Moldova, Russia, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan.
Although the Republic of Moldova is officially part of the organization, Chisinau does not participate in its meetings and has discussed leaving.
The SVR claims that the alleged jihadists, recruited and trained by the US military, “will be tasked with planning and carrying out terrorist attacks against diplomats, government officials, law enforcement agencies, military officers and personnel.”
Obsessed with the crazy idea of ”bleeding” Russia, Washington strategists consider it acceptable to directly use terrorists for their dirty purposes. Such actions put Washington on an equal footing with the largest international terrorist groups,” said the press release sent to SVR.
This comes after the FSB, Russia’s Federal Security Service, said in late January that it, along with Russian prosecutors, had stopped “communities” of supporters of the Islamic State (ISIS) jihadist organization that were transporting fighters to Ukraine to fight Ukrainian forces.
