Search teams rescued a woman and her two daughters on Friday, the fifth day after an earthquake hit ten provinces in Turkey. Meanwhile, the death toll in Turkey and Syria has exceeded 22,700, CNN reported, citing News.ro.
A woman was rescued at the 111th hour after the earthquake, and her two daughters were rescued one by one at the 112th hour in the heavily affected city of Kahramanmaras.
The rescue team said that after 50 bodies were recovered today alone, the “finding of three people alive” gave new hope.
Meanwhile, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said more than 141,000 rescuers were on the ground in 10 provinces of Turkey affected by the earthquake.
“We have more than 141,000 people, including foreign teams, working on the ground in 10 provinces. The Disaster Management Agency and other agencies are providing tents, containers and prefabricated buildings so that they can respond quickly to the needs,” he said during a speech in the city of Malatya.
Erdogan clarified that Turkish institutions and organizations are offering hot meals to earthquake relief teams through mobile kitchens and humanitarian canteens.
“We have allocated an initial fund of 100 billion Turkish Liras ($5,309,405.33) for all these works,” he said, adding that “from the AFAD (Turkish Disaster and Emergency Management Agency) emergency fund, we are starting to offer 15,000 Turkish lira ($796.51) per household as resettlement assistance for citizens whose homes are destroyed or have sustained moderate or severe damage.”
Erdogan also said those whose homes were destroyed would receive 5,000 Turkish lira ($265.50) a month in aid, while those whose apartment was destroyed would receive 2,000 Turkish lira ($106.20) a month.
