Poland closed one of its three border crossings with Belarus on Friday, and Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said there were “rising tensions” with the neighboring country.

Thus, the checkpoint in Bobrovnyky was closed at noon on Friday. The Polish Ministry of the Interior limited itself to a statement that “state security” justifies the closure of this checkpoint and that it will remain closed until further notice, AFP and Agerpres news agencies reported.

For his part, Prime Minister Mateusz Moravetskyi did not rule out similar decisions regarding other customs points with Belarus. “The reason is that tensions in relations with Belarus are growing and are being instrumentalized by the Russians and the Kremlin,” Moravetskyi told the press in Brussels.

Warsaw’s decision to close the Bobrovniki checkpoint came a day after a Belarusian court sentenced Belarusian-Polish journalist Andrzej Pochobut to eight years in prison for reporting critical of the Moscow-allied regime in Minsk.

After the announcement of this sentence, which Morawiecki called inhumane, the government in Warsaw announced that it would expand sanctions against Belarus, adding “persons responsible for repressive measures against Poles in Belarus” to the list of current sanctions.
