Bad weather “Barbara”: Prohibition of heavy vehicles on the road network of Magnesia

The movement of heavy vehicles – over 3.5 tons – is prohibited by the decision of the Magnesia Police Department along the entire road network of the PATH route, from the border of Magnesia with Larisa to the border of Magnesia with Fthiotida, due to heavy snowfall and bad weather conditions.

The ban also applies to side roads of the national highway, as well as the rest of Magnesia’s road network, which is dominated by snowstorms, according to APE-MPE.

It is noted that the traffic police stopped hundreds of trucks at the toll booths and parking lots PATHE.

Snow in Volos – Pelion

Bad weather has created problems with transportation as well as the daily lives of thousands of Magnesians.

Heavy snow has been falling since midnight and continues to this day in Volos, where everything is dressed in white and the snow depth in the center has reached 10 cm, and on the northern outskirts and above Periferiakos it exceeds 25 points. During the night, dozens of tanker trucks poured sea water onto roads again to keep them open despite heavy snowfall.

In Pelion, the ongoing snowfall for the fourth day has reached more than one meter of snow in Chania, Zagora, Mouresi and in all the villages in the south of South Pelion. More than 75 vehicles are constantly clearing Pelion’s road network, and salt shakers sprinkle salt on the roads to prevent the road surface from freezing. The roads are kept open, but cars need snow chains to drive from Ano Volos to Portaria, Makrinitsa and Chania, where temperatures are -9 degrees.

In coastal Pelion, on the side of Pagasitikos and from Agria to Argalasti, the snow exceeded 20 points, while the second wave of snowfall is more intense than yesterday, throughout southern Pelion.

In the city of Volos, where the snow has reached the sea again, temperatures are at zero, the central arteries are open, and Magnesia’s deputy governor, Dorothea Kolindrini, told the Athens Macedonian News Agency that “vehicle operators have reached a critical point as they work non-stop, trying to keep the roads open. Together with the municipality of Volos, we are working together and flooding the arteries, especially the avenues of Athens and Larissa, with sea water, so that cars can move better at the entrances and exits of the city, and also so that city buses can move and serve people.”

According to Volos Urban Transport, routes to the northern suburbs of Ano Volos, Anakasia, Stagiates, Katikhori, Agios Onoufrios, Alli Meria, as well as line 49 to Agia Paraskevi are not operating.

Today, none of the KTEL Magnisias routes to Pelion ran, but routes to Athens, Thessaloniki, Patras, Larisa and Almyros are being operated.

Schools of all grades are also closed today in the municipalities of Volos, South Pelion, Zagora Mouresi and Skiathos.

The Volos courthouse is also closed today and court services are closed.
