Drone images show the effects of a devastating earthquake in the city of Sarmada in the northwestern Syrian province of Idlib, The Guardian reports.

Drone footage shows members of the Syrian Civil Defense, also known as the White Helmets, near piles of rubble in the Syrian city of Sarmada, hours after the first earthquake struck.

Rescue operations are ongoing as many people are still trapped under the rubble. A member of the “White Helmets” is asking the international community for help to save the people of Syria.

A strong 7.8-magnitude earthquake hit central Turkey and northwestern Syria early Monday morning. The earthquake was followed by another devastating 7.5 magnitude earthquake at noon on Monday. In total, there were more than 145 strong lines.

At least 2,600 people have been killed and more than 12,000 wounded in Turkey and Syria at the moment.

In Syria, the death toll rose to 968. State news agency SANA reported 538 dead in government-held areas, while the White Helmets organization reported 430 dead in opposition-held areas.
