EE: Concerns about ChatGPT create a rigid framework for AI applications

European Commissioner for the Internal Market Thierry Breton said today that the new proposed EU rules for artificial intelligence will aim to address the potential risks associated with the ChatGPT application, as well as AI technologies in general.

Just two months after launching, ChatGPT, which can generate articles, essays, jokes and even poetry, has been named the fastest growing consumer app in history.

Some experts have already raised concerns that the systems used by such applications could be used for plagiarism, fraud and misinformation.

Need rules urgently

Breton spoke about the app for the first time today and said that rules need to be put in place urgently due to the dangers of using ChatGPT.

“As seen in ChatGPT, AI applications have much to offer businesses and citizens, but they can also pose potential risks. We need a stable regulatory framework to ensure the reliable use of artificial intelligence, which will be based on high-quality data,” Breton told Reuters.

ChatGPT is considered a general-purpose artificial intelligence system that can be used in a variety of ways under the draft EU regulation.

Breton’s goal is for the company that created ChatGpt, OpenAl, to work closely with developers of high-risk systems so that it can comply with European law.
