Bulgaria’s parliament, deeply divided over relations with Russia, on Wednesday declared the famine caused by Stalin’s regime in Ukraine in the 1930s, known as the Holodomor, a Ukrainian term for extermination by starvation, a “genocide”.

134 out of 240 members of the Bulgarian parliament voted for the resolution, writes Agerpres. 25 deputies voted against, all from the nationalist formation “Vozrazhdane”. Other deputies who do not take part in the vote were not present, including those from the Bulgarian Socialist Party, a formation closely linked to Russia.

The proposal to declare the Holodomor came from the pro-Western formations of the “Democratic Bulgaria” alliance and the conservative GERB party. These two parties are also among those who supported the resolution passed by the Bulgarian parliament in December on providing military aid to Ukraine in the face of Russian aggression.

The resolution adopted on Wednesday by the Bulgarian Parliament provides that the last Saturday of November will be declared the Day of Commemoration and Remembrance of the Holodomor Victims.

On December 15, the European Parliament recognized the Holodomor as genocide.
