France has not yet made a decision on the transfer of Leclerc main battle tanks to Ukraine, French Foreign Minister Catherine Colonna said during a visit to Odessa on January 26, “European Truth” reports.
The position of France differs from the position of Great Britain, Germany and the USA, which have already approved the shipment of Challenger, Leopard and Abrams main battle tanks to Ukraine, respectively.
Unlike Germany, which has increased its military aid to Ukraine under pressure from allies and the media, the French government has not been as heavily criticized, despite sometimes taking a similar stance to Germany.
Kolonna also noted that additional air defense systems remain a priority for Ukraine. She added that France “will respond to this request” regarding air defense.
On January 22, French President Emmanuel Macron said that he does not rule out the supply of French-made Leclerc main battle tanks to Ukraine.
Macron said that a decision on the transfer of Leclerc tanks to Ukraine will be made in the coming days and weeks, but it must be agreed with allies, in particular with Germany.
