It is expected that the first robotics kits will be delivered to 1821 school units within the next four months after the signing of the corresponding contract between Municipality of Trikkayaher ESTAAA (Greek Society for Local Development and Self-Government) and Space. This is the first time that public schools in the country will receive state-sponsored robotics equipment, and the number (1,821) of school units that received aid, as well as the funding of 1,821,000 units, is symbolic as the action was planned and funded in the context of the anniversary events of the “Committee 2021”. However, the implementation of a large program is expected from Ministry of Education over the next period of time in order to distribute control materials for teaching robotics in the context of flexible zone courses in more schools.
The contract was signed between the municipality of Trikkaya, the Hellenic Society for Local Development and Self-Government and Cosmote.
“Robotics is a way to teach children to structure their thinking, to learn the sequence of steps necessary to achieve a certain result. Structured thinking is important whether one is following positive sciences or theories, or doing art. explains “K” mayor of Trikkaya, Dimitris Papastergiou. A specific proposal for the procurement of materials for robotics was submitted by the municipality of Trikkaya as part of the activities for 1821, given that “robotics and new technologies are the revolution of our time,” Mr. Papastergiou adds. Although the program is prepared by a specific municipality, it nevertheless applies to all municipalities of the territory, and the participating schools will be selected by the Ministry of Education.
The tender was carried out by EETAA as a collegiate body of local government, and Cosmote was selected as the contractor. In the second year, and with funding from the same program (announcement of the corresponding competition is also expected), teachers and professors who wish to implement courses in robotics will be trained. Mr. Papastergiou emphasizes that great efforts will be made to make the most of the kits that will be distributed, while in many schools teachers and professors are already conducting lessons for children on their own initiative. After the distribution of the kits, it is planned to hold a pan-Greek competition among schools that will receive equipment to stimulate the creation of creative applications. “It’s amazing how much you can do when you combine imagination with a motorcycle,” concludes Mayor Trikkaya.
