According to Reuters, New Mexico officials plan to announce on Thursday whether they will file criminal charges against Alec Baldwin or others in the fatal shooting of a cameraman on the set of the western movie Rust.
New Mexico’s First Judicial District Attorney Mary Carmack-Altwiss and special prosecutor Andrea Reeb will announce their decision at 9 a.m. (4 p.m. GMT), according to a statement released Wednesday.
Galina Hutchins was killed and director Joel Souza was injured when a live bullet was fired from the gun Baldwin was using during a rehearsal in October 2021. The film was shot at Bonanza Creek Ranch outside of Santa Fe, New Mexico.
The “30 Rock” and “Saturday Night Live” actor, who also produced the “Rust” series, denies responsibility for the live ammunition.
Baldwin said he was told the gun was “cold,” an industry term that means it’s safe to use, and that he didn’t pull the trigger. He sued the team members for negligence.
An FBI forensic examination of the single-action revolver used by Baldwin found that it was “functioning normally” and would not have fired without the trigger being pulled.
The New Mexico State Medical Examiner’s Office ruled the shooting an accident, saying the gun was not intentionally loaded with a live bullet. Authorities were trying to determine how the real bullet ended up on the set.
Last year, Hutchins’ family settled a lawsuit against Baldwin and other producers. Under the deal, the low-budget film is set to resume shooting this month, with Hutchins’ husband serving as an executive producer.
