Garbiñe Muguruza served for the win, but Elise Mertens broke her

Muguruza, currently ranked 73rd in the world, led 6-3, 6-5 but was unable to close out the match on serve as Mertens (seeded 26) won the second set on a tiebreak, 7- 3.

With her morale shaken, Garbin (the former WTA number one) was ruled out again in the deciding set and Elise won 6-1. The game at Margaret Court Arena lasted two hours and 31 minutes.

In the next round, Elise Mertens (32 WTA) will play the winner of the match between Lauren Davis (USA, 57 WTA) and Danka Kovinic (Montenegro, 55 WTA).

Australian Open 2023 will be held from January 16 to 29. The champions of the title were Ashley Barty (now retired from sports) and Rafael Nadal.
