An Iranian man took his own life on Monday by jumping into the Rhone River in Lyon, southeastern France, in a posthumous video he said was meant to draw attention to the situation in his protest-ridden country, AFP reported.
The Iranian man was found drowned on Monday evening, police told AFP, confirming a report by local newspaper Le Progrès.
Judging by the video, the 38-year-old man could not be resuscitated, despite the intervention of firefighters who brought him back to shore, the same source said.
For two months, Iran has faced an unprecedented wave of protests since the 1979 Islamic Revolution. She was prompted by women’s rights demands following the death of Mahsa Amini, who was arrested for not wearing the Islamic headscarf properly.
Demonstrations for women’s freedom gradually turned into a larger movement against the Islamic regime.
Authorities, which it denounces as “riots,” have arrested thousands of people and sentenced several to death for participating in the protest movement.
“The police are attacking people, we have lost many sons and daughters, we have to do something,” the man says in a calm voice in his video posted on several social networks, before taking his own life.
“I decided to commit suicide on the Rhone River, this is a challenge to show that we, the Iranian people, are very tired of this situation,” he says.
“When you see this video, I will be dead,” he continued, before calling for the support of the Iranian people in their fight against the police and the government.
There were calls on social media for a protest late Tuesday afternoon in central Lyon to pay his respects.
In early December, the Iranian government made a gesture towards the demonstrators by announcing the dissolution of the morality police. But after that, the authorities executed by hanging two young people convicted of protests.
