
A 10-year-old girl who lost her sight at the age of 2.5 received a transplant, today is Monday, one of the corneas of 21-year-old Emma from Cretelost due to drift and abandonment in the center of Thessaloniki.
Following her family’s decision to donate her organs and after her heart, liver and kidneys were transplanted, one of her corneas was transplanted today and the operation was performed at Papageorgiou Hospital and the other is being evaluated at the AHEPA Transplant Center.
The director of the 2nd University Ophthalmological Clinic and Corneal Transplant Center of Papageorgiou Hospital, visibly moved, announced at 12:00 noon that the transplant had been successful.
“Recently completed transplantation of one cornea donated by a girl from Crete who died last week. Liptis is a 10-year-old girl from the south of Greece who was injured at the age of 2.5 years and has since had a transplant that was lost, she had three more operations and we hope that today will be the last one. The transplant went very well. The other cornea will be used by the AHEPA center. We have three more transplants scheduled for Thursday, all from new donors,” Mr Ziakas said, noting that when a grieving family decides to donate their lost child’s organs, others follow suit.
