Reports from Brazilian media that Pele is no longer responding to chemotherapy and is receiving “palliative care” have sent shockwaves through the football world, with the legendary footballer sending a message to his fans via social media.
Pele, “strong and full of hope”
The 82-year-old Brazilian said he feels “strong and full of hope” and that his condition will be “stable” (according to a medical report posted on Instagram).
“Friends, I wish everyone to remain calm and positive. I am strong and very hopeful to follow the treatment as always. I want to thank all the staff of the hospital for the help they gave me.
I have great faith in God and every message I receive from you gives me strength. And I’m also watching Brazil in the World Cup! Thank you very much for everything” – Pele on Instagram.
In a statement released late on Saturday, the Albert Einstein Hospital in Sao Paulo said Pele had “experienced a good response to treatment for respiratory infections” and was undergoing “chemotherapy re-evaluation”.
Pele, considered by many to be the greatest footballer of all time, underwent surgery last year for a colon tumor that was discovered during routine medical examinations.
