The US Department of Justice has dropped all charges against Huawei CFO Meng Wanzhou, who was detained in Canada on a US warrant on charges related to sanctions against Iran, Chinese media reported.
Her detention for nearly three years has strained relations not only between the US and China, but also between Canada and China.
U.S. District Judge Ann Donnelly dismissed the charges against Maine on Friday, preventing her from appearing in court again.
Meng, the daughter of Ren Zhengfei, the founder of Chinese telecommunications giant Huawei, was the CFO of the company founded by her father when she was arrested in Vancouver in December 2018. She was charged with bank fraud and other crimes for misleading HSBC Holdings Plc about the company’s business in Iran in violation of US sanctions.
In 2019, the US formally asked Canada to extradite Maine, but she remained in Canada under house arrest.
