In the European Union, airlines will be able to install new 5G technology on planes so passengers can use their phones and other devices as if they were on the ground.
The European Commission adapted the legislation on mobile communication in accordance with the latest standards. As a result, 5G coverage will also be present in airplanes.
“The sky is no longer the limit for high-speed, high-capacity connections,” said European Internal Market Commissioner Thierry Breton. “5G will provide innovative services for people and development opportunities for European companies.”
5G connection will become possible thanks to the installation of so-called “pico-cells” on board aircraft. Through this network station, phone calls, text messages and data traffic will be transmitted via satellites to the terrestrial mobile network.
In another decision, the European Commission wants to open up 5G frequencies for Wi-Fi in cars, buses and other modes of transport. EU member states must make the 5G band available for road transport by June 30, 2023.
