The “Generators of Hope” initiative, launched by the European Parliament and the Eurocities coalition, which unites more than 200 cities from 38 European states, intends to send hundreds of electric generators to Ukraine in the coming days to help the population facing winter. without electricity, heat and drinking water.

“Ten million Ukrainians are currently without electricity due to Russia’s attacks on critical civilian infrastructure,” EP President Roberta Metzola said at a press conference.

“The European Parliament and the EU have demonstrated extraordinary solidarity with Ukraine on the humanitarian, military and financial fronts. Now they (Ukrainians) need practical support to survive the winter,” Metsola emphasized.

The generators will be designed to support the operation of major facilities, namely hospitals, schools, water systems, care centers, shelters or mobile communications.

“We must act immediately. Winter is coming, we are running out of electricity and gas, we have no time to lose,” said Dario Nardella, President of Eurocities and Mayor of the Italian city of Florence.

Answering a question about the number of generators that can be transferred to Ukraine, he confirmed that it could be several hundred, including industrial generators.

Russia has launched a new wave of missiles and drones at Ukraine’s energy infrastructure in a series of such attacks that began in October to try to bring Kyiv to the negotiating table and reduce Ukraine’s fighting potential in a war provoked by Russian aggression.
