The guitarist achieved success with his pub rock band Dr. Feelgood since 1970 and then played music with Ian Dury before embarking on a solo career that spanned four decades.

But in addition to being a musician, he was also an actor, as he appeared as the silent executioner Sir Elyn Payne in two seasons of the hit HBO series Game of Thrones.

Ten years ago, he survived what was originally diagnosed as advanced pancreatic cancer. But he refused chemotherapy. “The decision was relatively simple – chemotherapy couldn’t do anything other than prolong my life for a short time, so I thought I’d rather enjoy the time I had left,” he told BBC Radio 5 Live.

However, the tests he underwent showed that the cancer was actually a rare and less “aggressive” tumor. He underwent an eleven-hour operation during which his pancreas, spleen, parts of his stomach and intestines were removed. In 2014, he beat cancer.

“Now I spend my time slowly coming to terms with the idea that my death is not inevitable and that I will live,” she said during the Q Awards.
