The Belgian national football team has learned that it is prohibited from using the second kit at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. FIFA took this decision after the word “Love” was printed on the shirts.
Belgium’s second kit contains the word “Love” and was banned from the 2022 World Cup in Qatar
This jersey is “road” and mostly white. But it also contains portions of rainbow colors and has the word “Love” written all over it.
In addition, the Belgians will also not be allowed to use the “One Love” captain’s armband.
FIFA says the kit can be used if the word “Love” is covered up or removed.
Belgium will make their 2022 World Cup debut in Qatar on Wednesday when De Bruyne and Co take on Canada.
Seven out of nine European countries have announced that they have abandoned the “One Love” banner, which promotes LGBTQ+ inclusion and rights.
In a press release, the seven national teams of the old continent said that they have abandoned the initiative, which involved the wearing of the “One Love” armband.
England, Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, Denmark, Switzerland and Wales have rejected this form of protest against Qatar, which criminalizes same-sex relationships.
“We cannot expose our players to sporting sanctions, so we have asked our captains not to try to wear this armband during the World Cup.”
FIFA’s kit rules state that: “At FIFA tournaments, match officials must wear official clothing and equipment provided by FIFA, including competition badges as determined and provided by FIFA.”
FIFA has launched its own captain’s armband as part of a social campaign with the United Nations, which will promote a separate campaign for each round of the tournament. The theme of the quarter finals will be “no discrimination”, but both campaigns do not mention LGBTQ+ rights.
