Since Monday, a temporary traffic light has been operating on Zenitnaya highway, at the intersection with Kojokaru Elena Si Vasile street, the capital city hall reported. This measure was the result of several weeks of protests by residents of the district, where a 19-year-old teenager died recently at a pedestrian crossing. We remind you that for 10 years the residents of the district have been unsuccessfully asking the municipality to install traffic lights at all pedestrian crossings on the Atiaeryanska road, where road accidents often occur.
On Monday, the capital’s mayor’s office reported on Facebook that the street administration has completed work on connecting to the electricity source and is continuing the legal procedure for installing stationary traffic lights.
The municipality reminds that “in order to permanently install a traffic light, it is necessary to complete the legal steps provided for by the current legislation, respectively: obtain the approval of the technical traffic commission (which was issued), perform a technical and economic feasibility study, approve technical and economic indicators, design and implementation.”
Thus, the temporary traffic light will operate until the completion of the legal procedures regarding the installation of the already approved four traffic lights for pedestrian crossings on Zenit Road.
Citizens of the area of Zenitnaya Road in Sector 5 protested every night for 3 weeks at the pedestrian crossing where a 19-year-old boy died.
The protest started spontaneously on the evening of October 11, when a 19-year-old boy died after being hit by a car at a pedestrian crossing. Since then, about 30-40 people have come out every night and continuously crossed the crosswalk to draw attention to the problem.
People say that there are frequent accidents at pedestrian crossings on Antieriyska Street, and since 2012, the capital city hall has tried to install a traffic light with a command button for pedestrians, but to no avail.
