The former socialist president of the Republic of Moldova, Ihor Dodon, was released from house arrest on Friday, reports EFE agency and the press from beyond Prut, citing Agerpres. The decision was made by the magistrates of the Supreme Court, instead establishing a preventive measure of judicial control for 60 days and a ban on leaving the country.
In this way, Ihor Dodon’s passport will be detained so that the ex-president cannot leave the country.
Ihor Dodon was detained on May 24, 2022 (the birthday of President Maia Sandu) for 72 hours, being accused in four criminal cases on charges of treason, corruption or illegal enrichment.
During the search of his apartment, prosecutors found more than 50,000 euros and 600,000 Moldovan lei.
Two days later, the ex-president was placed under house arrest. His brother-in-law, suspected of illegal enrichment in one of these cases, was also given a preventive measure, but with the conditions of detention in a colony. Dodon’s wife and mother are also indicted.
The former president denied all the allegations and from the beginning claimed that they were political files compiled at the behest of President Maia Sandu. He called Friday’s decision of the Supreme Court “the first victory”.
