People are returning to the theatre, and this year the theater is offering them everything. Variety with a large selection of contemporary and classical pieces, small and ambitious productions, experimental, many favorite lyrics, a few modern Greek pieces, rehearsals and performances with lots of music. Extraversion is strong after two years of forced inactivity due to the pandemic. The actors want to return to the stage, and the audience to the theater. And it’s true that theater scenes are going well so far.

One of the features of the season are musical shows. Musicals, musical theatre, musical readings, some dedicated to singers, even albums.

Who would have thought twenty years ago, when Giannis Oikonomidis presented the film “Spirtokuto”, exposing the Greek family, that it would become a musical. It was staged by the theatrical adaptation of the 90°C group, but is now presented in Stegi with a libretto by Giannis Economides and Doris Avgerinopoulos. It was directed by Giannis Nyarros, who also wrote the lyrics, and with Alexandros Livitsanos they also co-wrote the music.

In a completely different atmosphere, Shakespeare’s The Merry Wives of Windsor at the Piraeus Municipal Theater was transcribed into a musical by Gerasimos Evaggelatos (text and lyrics) to the music of Themis Karamouratides, staged by Lefteris Jovanides, set in the 80s. with all the accompanying social references and aesthetic excesses: lots of sequins, big blankets, bright shiny fabrics, hair volume. Living in a small town in England with sinful desires, marital jealousy, misunderstandings…

Romantic mood and noir atmosphere are promised by Charlie Chaplin’s City Lights at the National Theatre, on the stage of Chicken Rex filled with melodies by Theodoris Oikonomou. Choreography by Amalia Bennett and lyrics by Stavros Stavros. Only the history of his silent film was concealed from Chaplin.

Among the musicals and musical performances we find the “Court of Miracles” by Iakovos Campanellis, which is repeated in the Pallas with music by Stefanos Korkolis, to the words of Gerasimos Evangelitos and staged by Christos Sougaris, on the Lyric Stage “Cheap Cigarettes”, based on the film of Renos Charalambidis, which was turned into a musical, with music by Panagiotis Kalantzopoulos and a libretto by Petros Vouniseas, as well as “A Simple Transition”, a musical by Gerasimos Evangeliatos and Themis Karamouratides, which we saw in 2019 at the National Theater and now several performances at the Acropolis.

Of course, there is no shortage of singers in the theater, such as Alec Kanellido in Dimitris Malissov’s “Hello – The Musical” in Rialto, based on the album “Hello” by Phoebus (Tassopoulos), which went quadruple platinum 21 years ago. . In the Acropolis, Giorgos Koutlis is staging Giannis Kotsiras in the musical theater “Catastrophe A” to the verses of Odysseus to Ioannou. In January Kostas Makedonas participates in Alfred Zeri’s musical comedy The Sixth Floor. These are not the only musical performances, and we are still at the beginning of the season.
