Another Watch Oscar for Tudor

Almost every year that you enter a skill contest, you manage to win awards. That’s why Tudor’s “record” – 8 awards in 10 years of participation in the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève – becomes even more valuable. This year’s award recognizes the best diving model of 2022, a category dedicated to authentic seabed tools with reliable construction materials, design and features that fully meet the requirements of underwater use. And this is Pelagos FXD, where FXD is an abbreviation of the English word Fixed and refers to strong rods that are a fixed part of the case and through which the strap passes and remains securely attached to the wrist.

It is equipped with a blue jacquard weave strap with a gray stripe in the center, fastened with Velcro, and a second blue rubber strap with a woven texture and a titanium buckle.

The Pelagos FXD has been developed in collaboration with the divers of the French Navy and includes special technical features to meet the high demands. In addition to the case’s fixed bars, it has a 120-lug rotating scalloped bezel that rotates in both directions and has a reverse graduation from 60 to 0. It does not meet the ISO 6425:2018 diver’s watch specification, but does meet the special requirements of a method known as underwater navigation, which is one of the specialties of divers. Underwater navigation consists of moving a diver to a specific point on the seafloor on a predetermined course without ever resurfacing. Divers always do this in pairs tied with a rope and follow a series of straight courses with a magnetic compass.

For history

From the 1950s, when some of the first modern professional diving watches were produced, until the 1980s, Tudor supplied the French Navy with reliable underwater instruments. One such historic watch with a blue dial and bezel was the Ref. 9401 with the initials “MN” (from Marine Nationale) engraved on the case back, as well as the year of manufacture. This model entered the market in the mid-1970s and was supplied to the French Navy until the 1980s. century, especially the Diving School of the French Navy, as well as its divers. Although it was officially decommissioned by the French Navy 20 years ago, it remains on the wrist of reservists and retired sailors. This model was the inspiration for the Pelagos FXD.
