PSD President Marcel Ciolacu said early elections in Romania could be held if the rotation of prime ministers agreed between the PSD and the PNL for May next year is not respected, and if President Klaus Iohannis does not nominate a prime minister – the person who will be proposed to him by the Social Democrats, reports Agerpres.
On Sunday night on Antena 3, he was asked if the PSD was also analyzing the scenario of early elections.
“I think that early elections will take place only when this coalition stops working. I don’t see another political construction that will lead to the political stability needed in such a period. (…) I think that we are serious political people who will keep our word and the rotation will take place in May. The President of Romania has the authority to appoint the Prime Minister, but at the moment there is a public agreement, moreover, I firmly believe that the President of Romania also knows that this rotation will take place in May, I I don’t think that this time he will not appoint a person who will be decided by the PSD,” said Marcel Cholaku.
When asked if the head of state agrees with the rotation agreed in the coalition, he said: “I believe and want to live in a normal country, Mr. President Klaus Iohannis did not have the authority to decide what will happen between the PSD president and the PNL president. and with the president of the UDMR and with the minorities in the protocol.”
Cholaku explained that another scenario for early elections would be if President Iohannis does not accept PSD’s offer for the position of prime minister, as agreed by the protocol of the ruling coalition.
“I believe that at this moment Romania will enter a zone of political instability, and we will go to early elections. (…) I understood that many abnormal things were done, I understood that the president was held by a political party, but I think that it has entered a different era,” he also stated.
Cholaku says he is on good terms with Prime Minister Chuke
In the same context, the PSD leader emphasized that he has very good communication with Prime Minister Nikolae Chuke.
“Almost every day we talk about the big issues that are in both the legislative and executive areas so that when the rotation is done, we both know what we have to continue and what we have committed to as a state. This is for the first time in Romania, after the revolution, when it happens between two politicians, the top, two politicians who are the president of the PSD and the president of the PNL. And I’m glad that I’m talking to Mr. Prime Minister, “Cholaku said.
The joint trip with Prime Minister Chuke to Japan, added the president of the Social Democrats, is a proof of political seriousness and announced that such visits will take place in other countries as well.
“In addition, you saw that we had a joint trip to Japan and we will have joint trips to other countries, because this is the only way we can prove that we are a serious state, with serious politicians, regardless of discussions and calculations. In this at the moment, Romania is experiencing the biggest challenges, we are obliged to face these challenges,” Čolaku emphasized.
Answering a question about the current “disagreements” in the government coalition, he noted that Romania needs to be governed.
“We assumed it. I have no problem to continue to speculate and I firmly believe that this coalition should work at least until 2024 in the current international context, because otherwise we are making a mockery of Romanians,” Marcel Colacu assessed.
