The German government allocated another one billion euros to Ukraine from the state budget for 2023, this money is intended for protection against Russian cyberattacks and the collection of evidence of war crimes, Reuters reports.

Germany has been accused of not increasing military aid to Ukraine because Kyiv says it needs offensive combat weapons, including tanks, to fight the Russian army.

The 2023 budget allocation is a victory for the Greens, the party in the Berlin coalition that has been the biggest supporter of military support for Ukraine since Vladimir Putin’s invasion began in February.

Germany is Ukraine’s third-largest military donor, although it has provided far less military aid than the United States, whose arms supplies have been critical to Ukrainian armed forces’ successes on the battlefield, culminating in the recapture of Kherson, the largest city captured by Russia since the invasion began from Ukraine.

“The budget allocated to Ukraine clearly shows that our support far exceeds important and necessary arms supplies,” commented Robin Wagener, a representative of the Green Party and head of the parliamentary friendship group with Ukraine.

“We are investing huge funds in preserving peace in Europe and Ukraine,” he emphasized.

Part of the money will go to support teams collecting evidence of human rights violations and war crimes in Ukraine.

Additional funds will also be directed to support civil society, in particular to the protection of journalists from Belarus, Russia and Ukraine. (News.ro)
