Foreign Minister Jean Asselborn said on Tuesday in parliament in Luxembourg that at least 5.5 billion euros out of a total of 17 billion euros of Russian assets were frozen by the EU after Moscow went to war against Ukraine, reports Agerpres with reference to dpa.

“If Russia does not give in, new sanctions are inevitable,” Asselborn said. He also noted that it was important that the EU did not jeopardize its unity.

There can be no “neutrality” regarding Russia’s war against Ukraine. Whoever does not condemn Russia accepts the law of the stronger. “History will decide who was on the right side,” Asselborn said.

So far, Luxembourg has supplied Ukraine with arms and materials worth 72 million euros, which is 16% of the defense budget of the Grand Duchy.

In principle, Asselborn welcomed the EU’s expansion plans with Ukraine and the states of the Western Balkans. However, according to him, it is also necessary to discuss the issue of the EU’s absorption capacity.

The EU has so far adopted eight packages of sanctions since the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine eight months ago.
