The Serbian government on Saturday rejected as “unacceptable” a proposal by Germany and France to normalize relations with Kosovo, which included Serbia’s recognition of the independence of its former province, EFE reported, quoted by Agerpres.
“This does not give us the opportunity to have a dialogue, because the basis from which it starts (that Kosovo is independent) is unacceptable to us,” explained Serbian Foreign Minister Ivica Dacic, according to radio station B-92.
The National Security Council “unanimously concluded that this proposal is unacceptable,” announced Dacic, who added that his country maintains its position of not participating in European Union sanctions against Russia.
Who would agree to such a thing?
“They cannot ask us: first, to introduce sanctions against Russia. Second, to allow Kosovo to be admitted to the UN and the Council of Europe. Who would agree to this?” he stressed.
“There are no political proposals, they think they can solve it financially, but they are also not generous about it, as well as about (Serbia’s – no) accession to the European Union,” the minister said.
EU foreign affairs chief Josep Borrell on Friday expressed his belief that the French-German proposal represents “progress and a leap forward in the process” of normalizing relations between Serbia and Kosovo, which unilaterally declared independence in 2008.
The head of European diplomacy added that the responses of the two sides to this plan will be analyzed in the coming days, and reminded that the normalization of their relations is “very important” for the aspirations of the two countries to one day become members. of the European Union.
Serbia was promised financial assistance and acceleration of integration into the EU
While details of the Franco-German proposal have not been made public, regional media have indicated that it would require Serbia to recognize Kosovo’s independence and the former province’s accession to the UN as a sovereign state.
In return, Serbia will receive financial assistance and the opportunity to speed up the process of joining the EU.
Borrell’s office warned on Saturday that renewed tensions between Serbia and Kosovo were jeopardizing the mediation work carried out in recent years and “complicating the security situation in the region”.
Representatives of Serbs in the north of Kosovo decided to walk out of state institutions in the entity on Saturday in protest against the implementation of the decision of the central authorities regarding license plates of Serbian cars.
