A helicopter crashed on Saturday in southern Italy, killing all seven people on board, including a family of Slovenian tourists, Italian media reported, citing AFP.
The helicopter disappeared from radar in Castelpagano di Aprichena, a rural area in the Apulia region, and aviation and firefighters launched a search operation.
Later, the deputy head of the Apulia region, Raffaele Piemontese, confirmed that the helicopter was found and that all seven people on board died, writes News.ro with reference to Corriere della Sera. Among the victims is a family of four from Slovenia, including a 13-year-old girl, the newspaper reports. Other victims are a doctor and two helicopter pilots.
The helicopter was on a daily flight between Foggia in Puglia and the Tremiti Islands off the Italian coast when it encountered bad weather.
The mayor of the islands, Peppino Calabrese, told the press that the doctor at the last moment decided to take a helicopter instead of a ferry “due to bad conditions at sea”.
“Our community is in a state of shock. This has never happened in 30 years of service,” he said.
