North Korea launched an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) on Thursday, but it appears to have failed, South Korea’s military announced a day after the North’s record-breaking streak, AFP reported, citing news.ro.
“The launch of an intercontinental ballistic missile by North Korea has indeed ended in failure,” Seoul’s military said.
The first missile, launched shortly before 8 a.m. local time, headed toward the Sea of Japan, east of the peninsula. Authorities quickly issued warning messages urging people to take shelter.
The alarm was quickly raised: the missile ultimately did not cross the archipelago “but disappeared over the Sea of Japan,” Japanese Defense Minister Yasukazu Hamada said.
Seoul called the “long-range” missile an “intercontinental ballistic missile” (ICBM), although it was initially thought to be an “unidentified missile,” Yonhap news agency explained.
According to South Korean authorities, the missile was launched from the Sunan region, north of Pyongyang. This is North Korea’s first intercontinental ballistic missile launch since the end of May, Seoul’s military confirmed to Yonhap.
On Thursday, North Korea also launched two more short-range missiles.
On Wednesday, Pyongyang had already launched 23 missiles, one of which crossed the “Northern Limit Line” (NLL), which extends the inter-Korean land border into the sea, while remaining in international waters.
