A 15-year-old suspect was arrested Friday after a shooting that killed five people in the North Carolina capital, Raleigh’s police chief confirmed Friday, saying the teenager was hospitalized in critical condition.
Police have yet to determine a motive for the attack, which turned a quiet, middle-class neighborhood into the scene of several crimes Thursday, Police Chief Estella Patterson said at a news conference.
Patterson did not name the suspect or say how he was injured.
The shootings began at 5:00 p.m. (9 p.m. GMT) on the streets of Raleigh’s Hedingham neighborhood, where residents were told to stay indoors for several hours while police searched for the attacker.
The suspect was later found near the Neuse River, Patterson said. After an argument, the police detained him in a house near this park.
“No one should have to feel this fear in their communities — no one,” said Democratic Gov. Roy Cooper.
According to Patterson, three women – aged 52, 49 and 35 – and a 16-year-old boy were among those killed in the attack. The 29-year-old officer who died in the attack has been identified as Gabriel Torres, who was on his way to work when the incident occurred.
Two people were injured: a police officer who was treated and released, and a 59-year-old woman who was hospitalized in critical condition, Patterson said.
The police chief did not provide details of the attack itself and could not say whether the suspect was related to the victims.
