
Russian authorities said that more than 400 fighters of the Ukrainian Azov regiment were taken to various detention facilities in Russia, CNN reports.
“From the end of September to the present, 402 nationalists from the Azov battalion were taken to the territory of Russia and placed in specialized institutions in the Volgograd, Rostov, Belgorod, and Voronezh regions,” the Investigative Committee of Russia said in a statement. on Thursday
The “Azov” regiment, which is part of the National Guard of Ukraine, is classified as a terrorist organization in Russia. Its fighters distinguished themselves in the defense of the “Azovstal” metallurgical plant in Mariupol.
The committee said that its investigators, in cooperation with the Federal Security Service (FSB) and the Federal Penitentiary Service (FSVP), are registering “new facts of brutal treatment of civilians by the Ukrainian army.”
Earlier this month, the acting commander of the Azov regiment, Nikita Nadtoshi, said that about 2,500 soldiers from Mariupol, including about 700 soldiers from Azov, remained in Russian captivity.
This is after 108 “Azov” fighters returned to Ukraine at the end of September as part of a complex prisoner exchange.
