French Foreign Minister Catherine Colonna warned on Tuesday, speaking about new sanctions against Minsk, that Belarus “would do well” not to join Russia’s war in Ukraine, AFP and Agerpres reported.
She told Radio France that “this issue will undoubtedly be on the agenda of the G7 talks,” which are actually meeting on Tuesday for an emergency meeting, a day after Russian missile attacks on Ukraine.
Belarusian dictator Oleksandr Lukashenko on Monday accused Poland, Lithuania and Ukraine of preparing “terrorist attacks” and “rebellion” in Belarus and announced the deployment of a “regional” military group together with Moscow.
Minsk “would do well” not to join the war, threatened Kateryna Kolonna.
She emphasized that Belarus is already under sanctions after the 2020 presidential election, recognized by the international community as “fraudulent” and not recognized by European Union (EU) member states, and that Belarus’s complicity with Russia in the invasion of Ukraine has strengthened these sanctions.
France threatens the regime of Oleksandr Lukashenka with new sanctions
“This country must be warned. Any additional support for the war that Russia is waging in Ukraine will lead to additional sanctions,” she threatened.
Minsk, an ally of Russia, particularly in the Russian war in Ukraine, gave Moscow territory in Belarus during the Russian offensive on Ukraine, but the Belarusian army has not yet participated in armed confrontations on Ukrainian territory.
At least 19 people were killed and more than 100 were injured as a result of the Russian campaign of terror attacks that began on Monday throughout Ukraine, including in Kyiv.
Ukrainian President Vladimir Putin justified the attacks as retaliation for what he blamed as a “terrorist” attack carried out by Ukraine on a bridge connecting Russia with Crimea, the Ukrainian peninsula illegally annexed by Moscow in 2014.
