Ukraine on Monday accused Russia of being a “terrorist state” for killing civilians in a massive attack on Kyiv and other major cities that was condemned by the UN and the West, AFP reported.
All UN member states are gathering in New York for an emergency general assembly to discuss a resolution condemning Moscow’s annexation of Ukrainian regions.
With the resolution, which could be put to a vote on Wednesday, the West hopes to show that President Vladimir Putin’s Russia is isolated on the international stage.
But the meeting was dominated by Monday morning’s strikes, and the two warring nations crossed swords at the United Nations.
“Russia has once again proven that it is a terrorist state that must be restrained in the strongest possible way,” said Serhii Kyslytsia, Ukraine’s ambassador to the UN.
In response, his Russian colleague Vasyl Nebenzya compared the Kyiv regime to “the most outrageous terrorist organization”, which two days after the explosion – “sabotage”, according to Moscow – which seriously damaged the Russian Bridge in Crimea.
Speaking before the General Assembly, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, “deeply shocked”, condemned the Russian bombings as “a new and unacceptable escalation of war” for which civilians are “paying the ultimate price”.
US President Joe Biden spoke out against the “absolute brutality” of his Russian colleague, and European diplomacy condemned the “barbaric attacks”.
Ukrainian rescue services reported a preliminary death toll of 11 and 89 wounded across the country, but Ambassador Kyslytsia said 14 civilians were killed and 97 injured.
Before the strikes, the UN decided to bring the annexation of Ukrainian regions to the General Assembly, where each of the 193 members has one non-veto vote, after Russia blocked a similar text in the Security Council on September 30. .
