At least 76 people have been killed in Iran since the start of protests sparked by the death of a young woman after she was arrested by morality police, the Iran Human Rights NGO (IHR) said on Monday, AFP reported.

“According to information collected by the Iranian Organization for Human Rights, at least 76 people were killed during the protests” in 14 provinces of the country, the NGO said in a statement, adding that “six women and four children” were among the dead.

The IHR said it had received “video footage and death certificates confirming that live bullets were fired at the protesters.”

Iranian authorities have arrested more than 1,200 people, mostly in northern Iran, since the beginning of the protest movement.

The protests began on September 16, the day of the death of Mahsa Amini, who had been arrested three days earlier in Tehran for “improper clothing” in the Islamic republic, which has a strict dress code for women, including wearing Islamic clothing. veil
