The new Princess of Wales Kate and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, on Monday chose symbolic jewelry for their mourning outfits at the grand funeral of Queen Elizabeth II of Great Britain, AFP and Agerpres reported.

Prince William’s wife wore a necklace with four strands of pearls connected by a diamond that belonged to Elizabeth II.

Created by renowned British jeweler Garrard, the first house to be named an official Crown Jeweller, the necklace was also worn by Lady Diana, who at the time also held the title of Princess of Wales, during a state visit to London by Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands.

According to The Court Jeweller, a blog specializing in royal jewelry, the jewel was commissioned by the queen from a set of pearls donated by the Japanese government after her first state visit to the country in 1975.

The Princess of Wales matched the jewelry with earrings with diamonds and pearls from Bahrain, also from the sovereign’s collection.

The earrings were created from pearls received as a gift from Bahrain on the occasion of the marriage of Elizabeth II to Philip Mountbatten in 1947. The monarch often wore these jewels in the first years of her reign.

Kate wore the same set of jewelry to the funeral of Prince Philip, who passed away last year.

More discreetly, Megan chose one pair of earrings, also made of diamonds and pearls. They were given to her by the Queen in 2018 when she joined the royal family after marrying Prince Harry – before the couple moved to California after falling out and gave up their official duties.

Pearls are associated with mourning, a symbolism that dates back to the reign of Queen Victoria.

British designers were also in the spotlight at state funerals with pomp. Kate was in a black dress by Alexander McQueen, and Meghan preferred a black dress by Stella McCartney.
