Mexico will propose to the United Nations next week in New York to create a “peacekeeping mission” in Ukraine, President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said on Friday, AFP reports.
“It is about the urgent search for an agreement to end the war in Ukraine,” the Mexican president said in an official speech on the occasion of the holiday.
The initiative, which will be presented at the UN General Assembly by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Marcelo Ebrard, provides for the creation of a committee on dialogue and peace, which, “if accepted and there is a desire”, will include Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Pope Francis. and UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres, explained López Obrador.
“The peacekeeping mission should immediately aim to end hostilities in Ukraine and start direct negotiations with Ukrainian President Zelenskyi and Russian President Putin,” López Obrador continued, criticizing the actions of the UN in this conflict.
According to him, the organization “remains inactive” and “suffers due to formalism and political inefficiency, which limit it to a purely decorative role.”
About 150 leaders are expected in New York next week for the UN General Assembly.
