When Irini Pappa participated in the recording of the album Aphrodite’s Child

There are dozens of her theater and film moments that can be remembered from the great career of Irini Pappa, who died at the age of 96. But there is a memorable musical moment in this rich and long journey: the one in which Irini Pappa entered the studio to voice the track Aphrodite’s Child.

All this in “∞ (Infinity)” what we heard at the record station about greek discography and progressive rock in general, “666” where is the group Vangelis Papathanasiou as well as Demi Russo released it 1972.

However, even before the album hit the shelves of music stores, the internal tension that existed between the band members during the recording in Paris resulted in a dispute between Vangelis Papathanasiou and the main initiator of the album with Mercury Records, as the record company had objections to “∞ (Infinity)”.

For the part, oh Costas Ferris, who wrote the lyrics for the album, originally wanted a narrator with a heavy British accent.

However, in the play we finally heard her Irini Papa in a repeated mantra that ends up sounding like a cry of madness: “I was, I am, I am coming” says the actress with growing tension, accompanied by percussion performed by Papathanasiou. The phrase is a verse from Revelation of John – which, after all, runs through the entire theme of the record – and translates as “I who was, am and will come.”

However, given the sexual connotations the phrase could have in English, and combined with Pappa’s breathless narration that sounded like an orgasm, the track “666” was considered particularly controversial. After all, Vangelis Papathanasiou described it as a metaphor “the pain of birth and the joy of sexual intercourse.”

The participation of Irini Pappa was not the only surprise on the landmark album: in “Office”, 14-second interlude, the recitation of which was undertaken by the artist Yannis Tsarouhis.
