Influential Republican Senator Lindsey Graham introduced a bill on Tuesday that would ban abortions across the US after 15 weeks of pregnancy, prompting immediate protests from President Joe Biden’s camp, AFP reported, citing Agerpres.
Abortion rights have been at the center of political debate since the Supreme Court’s ruling in June, which gave each state the freedom to ban it on its own territory.
U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham, a close ally of Donald Trump, praised the merits of his bill on Tuesday, insisting it offers a “consensus” solution to the problem.
By banning abortion after 15 weeks, America “would be federally on a pretty consistent level with the rest of the world,” the South Carolina congressman emphasized during a press conference. He repeatedly gave the example of France, where the period of voluntary termination of pregnancy is 14 weeks.
“Generally, being as reckless as the French is seen as a good thing,” the senator joked.
However, the text intends to leave in force all abortion bans adopted by a number of conservative states after the Supreme Court decision.
While the bill is more moderate than many other Republican proposals on the issue, it gives conservatives an opportunity to sweeten their message to America’s overwhelmingly pro-abortion voters with the midterm elections less than two months away.
It marked the immediate reaction of the Democratic camp, which is betting on the issue to mobilize its base in view of this traditionally dangerous election for the ruling party.
The text “will strip women of their rights in all 50 states,” White House spokeswoman Karin Jean-Pierre condemned.
“Don’t be under any illusions: if the Republicans have a chance, they will definitely pass even more draconian laws than this bill,” House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, a Democrat, added, as quoted by AFP.
