Ukrainian troops are retaking control of towns and villages around the strategic city of Izyum as part of a counteroffensive against Russian troops in eastern Ukraine, AFP reported in Kyiv on Sunday.
“The liberation of part of the territory of the Kupyan and Izyum districts of the Kharkiv region is underway,” the General Staff of Ukraine reported on the 200th day of the conflict.
Earlier, Kyiv reported that its troops had entered Kupyansk.
In early September, the Ukrainian military first announced a counteroffensive in the south, and earlier this week made a sudden and lightning-fast breakthrough through Russian lines in the northeast, in the Kharkiv region.
After announcing the liberation of about 30 cities on Friday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi said on Saturday that the Ukrainian army had recaptured about “2,000 square kilometers of territory” in September.
In its updated report on Sunday, the army said that 2,000 square kilometers of territory had been retaken from Russian forces in recent days.
Russia announced on Saturday that it had “regrouped” its forces from the “Balaklia and Izyum districts” to “strengthen” its position around Donetsk, further south, one of the pro-Russian separatist capitals.
