A former maintenance worker at the private residence of Israeli Defense Minister Benny Gantz has been sentenced to three years in prison for trying to spy on the minister for Iran, Israel’s Justice Ministry announced Tuesday, citing AFP.
38-year-old Israeli Omri Goren Horochovsky was arrested in November 2021.
He is accused of trying to provide information from Gantz’s home to the Black Shadow hacking group, which the Justice Department described as “linked to Iran.”
The Shin Bet internal security service said the accused never had access to “confidential documents” and therefore did not divulge state secrets.
According to the Ministry of Justice, Omri Goren Horokhovsky entered into a plea agreement with the Central District Court, in which he “confessed that he tried to pass information to the enemy.”
The court sentenced him to “three years of imprisonment.”
Omri Goren Horochovsky had a criminal record, including five convictions and prison terms for various crimes, including a bank robbery, raising questions about how he worked in the home of one of Israel’s top security officials.
