Aleksander Ceferin, UEFA president, said on Monday that Spain and Portugal will host the 2030 World Cup, Reuters reported.
The two countries signed an agreement on joint candidacy in 2020, which was officially formalized in June.
“I am sure that the 2030 World Cup will be held in Spain and Portugal. This program is a winner and we will do everything we can to help two countries that love, live and breathe football and have good infrastructure.” Ceferin said in the video conference mode during the opening of the Football Talks international congress in Lisbon.
The hosts of the World Cup 2030 will be determined in May 2024.
Spain, the country that hosted the 1982 World Cup, unsuccessfully submitted an application together with Portugal to host the 2018 World Cup, the organization of which was entrusted to Russia. Portugal did not host the World Cup, but was the host of EURO 2004.
Four South American nations, Argentina, Uruguay, Chile and Paraguay, have announced a joint bid to host the 2030 World Cup, which would have sentimental significance given that the first competition was held in Uruguay in 1930.
The 2022 World Cup will be held in Qatar from November 20 to December 18. The next edition will take place in 2026 in Canada, the USA and Mexico, writes Agerpres.
