Strong earthquake vibration 4.7 and then 5.2 and 4.5 on the Richter scale. Samo, which happened yesterday caused no damage, but alarmed the inhabitants of the island, who feared that more powerful earthquakes would follow. Moreover, experts monitoring the seismic series expressed doubts that the main earthquake has already occurred or there is a possibility of a larger one.
Two months before the two-year anniversary of the 2020 earthquake and the tragic deaths of two crushed teenagers, 15-year-old Klairis (Cleopatra) Limberis and 17-year-old Aris Tsiuras, yesterday’s seismic tremors have awakened memories and caused great anxiety among residents. The first earthquake measuring 4.7 on the Richter scale occurred at 12:56 pm 14 km south-southwest of Pythagorion Samos and was felt in the Dodecanese. Literally a quarter of an hour later, at 13.10, there was a stronger earthquake measuring 5.2 on the Richter scale, and shortly before 17:00 another earthquake measuring 4.5 on the Richter scale shook the island.
Yesterday’s aftershocks of 4.7, 5.2 and 4.5 on the Richter scale caused no damage, but brought back memories of the great quake of 2020.
The positive point, according to seismologists, is that the focus of the earthquakes has nothing to do with the strongest earthquake in the north of Samos on October 30, 2020. They note, however, that the fault from which the quakes originated this time is also quite active and has caused major quakes in the past.
However, it is positive that it is located at a distance of 14 km from the island, “which is why both earthquakes were felt, no matter how superficial they were, but apparently they were not destructive,” as pointed out by seismologist Gerasimos Papadopoulos, director of seismological research at Institute of Geodynamics of the National Observatory of Athens.
At the moment, no damage has been reported on the island, however, for the next 48 hours, all services will be on alert so that any problem that arises can be resolved. According to representatives of local authorities, there were no instructions for the preventive evacuation of residents from their homes.
