The Belgian government announced on Wednesday a number of measures in response to a sharp increase in energy prices, Agerpres reports with reference to Reuters. Among the announced measures are a reduction in energy consumption in public buildings and a proposal to tax the excess profits of energy companies such as Engie and TotalEnergies.

Belgian Prime Minister Alexandre De Croo said that in public buildings heating will be limited to 19 degrees Celsius and the use of air conditioners will be reduced, and the lighting of institutions and monuments will be turned off after 19:00.

The Belgian federal government has also decided to extend the reduced VAT of up to 6% on gas and electricity and the special electricity tariff for the poor until the end of the first quarter of 2023.
