The authorities of the German state of Brandenburg, located in the northeast of the country, reported on Wednesday that the situation on the Oder River has normalized, the German agency DPA reports, citing Agerpres.

“The acute crisis is behind us,” Regional Environment Minister Axel Vogel told the parliament of the state of Brandenburg. Oxygen and chlorophyll levels are falling back to near normal levels, and no more dead fish have been found in recent days, he added.

The small crabs, which are used to test water quality, did not die again after such tests, indicating that the river’s ecosystem is on the road to recovery.

Since the beginning of April, a large number of dead fish have been found in the waters of the Oder River, which flows along the German-Polish border. The cause of the high fish mortality in the Oder is still not precisely determined, there are several factors that probably contributed to this ecological disaster, among them hundreds of chemicals found in the water analysis, higher salt concentration in the water, low water levels due to drought, algal blooms and high temperatures.
