A piece of a man’s leg was found in a hot spring in Yellowstone, the US National Park reported on Friday, which is investigating the circumstances of the man’s death, AFP reports.
The foot, which had the shoe on, was discovered by an officer on Tuesday in the “abyss pool”, one of the deepest natural pools of warm water (60°C) in the park.
Initial elements of the investigation conducted by park police “indicate that an event involving a person likely occurred on the morning of July 31, 2022 at Abyss Pool,” the release said.
“Currently, the park believes that this is not a criminal act. The investigation continues to find out the circumstances of the death,” the park added.
This is not the first tragic incident in this national park in the American West, the oldest in the country.
In 2016, a young man died after falling from a bridge into another thermal spring, and last year two people were severely burned.
Authorities once again reminded visitors to stay on trails and “exercise extreme caution” near geothermal areas.
The park is known for its geothermal activity and contains about half of the active geysers in the world.
