Olivia Newton-John: the rise of songs and videos after her death

A few days after her death at the age of 73, her songs and music videos are played on demand. Olivia Newton John hit 11,267,494 in the week ending August 11, metrics firm Luminate Data told Variety. This is 614% more than the previous week.

The event was particularly impressive given that the popular artist’s death was announced on August 8, and the numbers only refer to four days of this upward trend.

Last week, Newton John had 1,577,978 plays of her music, which in itself is a high number for someone who dominated the US music charts in the early 1980s.

Her music streaming increased by 1481% from one week to the next. The number of people who listened to her music in the week ending August 4 reached only 382,500 people. But in the week that began three days before her death, that number rose to 6,048,300.

While album sales have lagged significantly in the streaming era, their growth has been the largest of any (2135%) with 5,836 copies in the last week, up from 241 copies in the previous week.

As for the soundtrack for the movie adaptation of the musical Grease, its total streams have increased by “only” 231%, and that’s because a lot of people have enjoyed watching Grease since its release.

In the week ending August 11, “Grease” songs received 8,418,675 streams, compared to 2,540,498 streams the previous week, according to Luminate. Album sales are up 1339%, although as mentioned, buying full soundtracks is a small piece of the pie.
