The US State Department has approved $89 million in aid to Ukraine to equip and train 100 teams for one year to clear mines and unexploded ordnance, an official said on Tuesday, according to Reuters and News.ro.

This assistance is currently the most important US program for demining Ukraine.

The official compared demining in Ukraine with demining in Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos.

“If we look at some of the conflicts in the recent past, like the Vietnam War, we’re still working on removing unexploded ordnance from Southeast Asia 50 years after the war ended. There may be a similar situation,” he said.
