Venizelos in the Cup

One could say that with so much that has been written about him Eleftherios Venizelos, especially this year, as if everything has been said about the personality and deeds of the great Greek politician. But a tour of House Museum of Venizelos in Halepa Chania he showed us that the stories around him never end.

Precious relics of the house include the pennies with which Venizelos signed the Treaties of Sevres and Lausanne, antique furniture and artefacts, blood-stained clothes from his first assassination attempt in Lyon, France, and the original car in which he was present at the time of the second assassination. an attack on it in 1933 with punctures from 66 bullets, etc., there are also small household items.

There are Venizelos’ glasses with a case, a leather notebook with an internal mirror, his revolver, a six-shooter “Smith and Wesson”, a portable gramophone, a gift from Emmanuel Benakis, a small mother-of-pearl knife and other small items. Items.

Perhaps the most unusual items that did not belong to him, but were necessarily associated with him, are two metal boxes of “Coffee Venizelos”.

According to the museum’s description, Venizelos coffee “Greek-style”, i.e. pot-roasted, was apparently sold in 1920 in New York City by two companies: coffee in red and blue boxes from the family of Greek immigrant George Callas, and coffee in a brown box from Turkish company T.&A. coffee co. represented by the expatriate Napoleon Poulos.

It looks like the business demon saw another aspect of Venizelos’ personality and range and used him to make the coffee of alienation. However, a quick Internet search reveals that some people still enjoy a cup of Venizelos Coffee today.
