Internationalization Efforts Accelerate Greek Universitiesin an era when data is changing in higher education. Distance education, criteria-based funding, the possibility of establishing branches abroad, joint study programs are some of the chapters that the new framework law will “open up” for Greek universities, which should become oriented towards the outside world. In particular, in 2017 EE took the initiative to create European universities, with the aim of strengthening intra-European research and academic knowledge, as well as the main goal of European universities – to compete with the ever-growing Asian, as well as with the traditional forces of American universities. It was planned that the university consortiums would consist of universities from EU member states, and the geographical distribution of universities in each consortium was chosen. The European Commission estimates that around 280 institutions from member countries will eventually join the European University. At the first stage, six Greek universities participated in 41 alliances created in 2019 and 2020.

At the end of July, the European Commission announced the results of a new call for proposals, as well as new funding. Thus, CIVIS European University, which is part of EKPA, is among those who will receive funding for another 4 years. “Since its launch in 2019, CIVIS has developed interdisciplinary thematic modules of European interest based on addressing social issues. Thanks to this, teachers of institutions participating in CIVIS have been able to create innovative educational programs. “Hundreds of students have already taken part in one of the more than 200 CIVIS courses, online or in person at another alliance member university,” said the rector of the University. Athens, Thanos Dimopoulos.

In addition, univ. Crete is owned by Ingenium European University, which has been selected for funding over the next 4 years under the Erasmus+ programme. The university will receive 1.5 million euros, including for the implementation and coordination of a single digital space of the European University Ingenium. “The symbolic initiative of the EU. allows the Ingenium network to become an integrated European university with 10 campuses across the EU, with a total of 172,000 students and 9,200 researchers,” said the rector of the institution, Mr. Georgios M. Kontakis. The European Universities EPICUR SHAPE-T, in which AUTH participates, and CONEXUS Plus, in which the Agricultural University of Athens participates, also received funding.

In the same context of extraversion efforts, a few days ago he visited the Univ. Chinese Aegean Ambassador to Greece Xiao Junchenk. Representatives of the university mentioned the existing cooperation with universities and institutions in China, as well as plans for future cooperation. According to the rector of the educational institution, Chrissy Vitsilaki, “The Chinese Ambassador expressed satisfaction with the interest of the Aegean University and its branches in further strengthening cooperation. He said that China’s student community is large, and about 700,000 of them study abroad every year. In this context, the Aegean University can become an important pole for attracting students from China.”
