Spanish scientists have identified the only known case in the world 36 year old womanwhich survived after 12 different volumesof which at least five aggressive cancers.
The first tumor appeared when the patient was still an infant, followed by other tumors every few years.
Even before she was 40 years old, the patient had developed a total of 12 tumors, of which at least five were malignant and aggressive.
Each tumor was of a different type and appeared in different parts of her body. But her immune system, in all cases, developed a strong natural anti-inflammatory response, coping with cancer.
Its researchers National Cancer Research Center (CNIO) of Spainheaded by Dr. Marcos Malubrespublished in the journal Science Advances, said the unusual case could open up new possibilities for early diagnosis and more effective cancer immunotherapy.
According to scientists, the patient’s unprecedented long-term protective ability seems to be associated with mutations that she inherited from both parents in a gene (MAD1L1), which plays an important role in the process of cell division and proliferation.
“We still do not understand how this person could develop during fetal development and how he was able to overcome all his pathological problems,” Malubres said, noting that to date, not a single such case has been recorded in the world.
“From a scientific point of view, we can’t talk about a new syndrome, because this is a description of a unique case, but biologically it is something similar,” the researcher said. Miguel Urioste.
